My question is, does anyone have a gun that has both the date code stamp (from 1968,1969, or 1970) and a serial number? These would be the 24J-DL black receiver version, 24S-E, 24V-A.

1977 is the date of manufacture. The letter is in the serial number, not part of the lever boss code/LBC which is a different matter. There is no LBC in 1977, 1967 was the last full year for that. The.308 was introduced in 1952, however Savage did not produce 99's in that caliber until 1955, as they had to lengthen the internal dimensions of the levergun to accept the slightly longer.308 cartridge. Savage started putting a letter in front of the serial number in 1968, and went to B, C, D etc.

All Savage firearms manufactured after December 1968 have a serial number which will have a letter prefix. This was done to clearly identify which firearms were manufactured after the Gun Control Act of 1968 went into effect.

The graphic below outlines the starting and ending serial number for each year of production from 1969 thru the beginning of 2012 (the most recent we have data for). Since this information is readily offered here we will not respond to any requests to date Savage firearms whose serial number has a letter prefix. If it's newer than what's listed in the table below you can get a general idea of when it was made by visiting, but if you want something more specific you will have to contact Savage.
