It's not quite as good as Project Zero, but it's not bad either in my opinion. The first Project Zero had flaws though, with unbalanced ghost difficulty (some being pretty cheap), the re-use of the same tile puzzle several times through the course of the game, and honestly maybe a little too much backtracking. However, it still had fantastic atmosphere and felt rather novel with a lot of its mechanics.

DreadOut is episodic, so one cannot compare the full experience yet (Act 2 releases later as a free update for purchasers), but its a lot lower budget than FF, with a lower staff count and far lower budget. The atmosphere is very good in DreadOut I feel, and helped by a fairly unique audio design element, but compared to FF there's a few things it does worse. The snapping shots of ghosts is a bit weaker, as there's no charging shots or damaging an enemy more if you shoot them right before they attack you, or any sort of real point or upgrade system. So the combat feels a bit-more Fatal Frame-lite as it is.

And they manage to feel fairly different, as Fatal Frame pulls a lot from Japanese folklore and myths while DreadOut pulls a lot from Indonesian ones. So I would say not as good, but still good, and I think if you liked the FF series there's a far higher chance this sort of title may be more in-line for you. But it's first act is on the shorter side (though secrets aplenty), and a bit low-budget, but has a lot of heart in it. I don't think it reaches the highs or lows of FF personally, but I also feel it has its own rather good, and somewhat unique highs and lows. I love the game, but the it's made by a small indonesian studo while Project Zero has been made by a whole team of Tecmo who was already had two succeful studios, Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden and Dead Or Alive) and Zero (Deception, etc.). They had more ressources and experience to develop on Playstation 2, but ti was their first try in Survival Horror game.

DreadOut is really good and different enough. Maybe if the game is successfull, they could release an upgraded pack of textures to make it look better. But they sais act 2 will have different game mechanics.

At the moment you get a good game that is a little short and could use a little more polish here and there.
